Diamond Rebels Open Fall Practice
9/21/2013 | Baseball, Blog
After a rainout on Friday, the Ole Miss baseball team opened fall practice on Saturday with its first inter-squad scrimmage.Â
Senior right-hander Aaron Greenwood and junior right-hander Sam Smith got the starts for the Blue team and Red team, respectively, and the 10 pitchers between the two teams combined to allow just two runs.
Scoring for the scrimmage was broken down into three categories -- runs, bunting and energy -- and while the Blue team won the runs part, 2-0, it lost both the bunting and energy parts.Â
The bunt contest was situational before each half inning, with a batter at the plate and runner at first, and the energy part was based on communication, running on and off the field between half innings, running down to first base and overall energy.
Individually, senior catcher Will Allen and junior first baseman Sikes Orvis delivered back-to-back RBI's for the Blue team in the bottom of the first, and then it was all pitching and defense.
Head coach Mike Bianco was impressed with junior right-hander Hawtin Buchanan, who worked two scoreless innings, and freshman middle infielder Errol Robinson, who showed good range and a strong arm at second base and shortstop.
Another defensive standout was junior outfielder Braxton Lee, a junior college transfer from Pearl River, who threw out a runner at the plate. Behind the plate, Allen threw out a base runner at second. And to close things out, junior right-handers Josh Laxer and Scott Weathersby worked the final two innings for the Blue team and Red team, respectively.
1st intra-squad in the books! ENERGY was off the charts! That is the way the R.E.B.S. play fast! Pitching and defense was great!
