Women's Tennis Rolls on at USTA/ITA Regionals

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Day two of the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships came to a close with the Ole Miss Women's Tennis team placing one team in the doubles semifinals and two players in the singles quarterfinals.
The day began with doubles, and the Rebels both won their third round matches. Third-seeded Erin Stephens and Iris Verboven teamed up to defeat Bennett Dunn and Aryn Greene of Alabama 8-4, while Mai El Kamash and Arianne Hartono downed Trang Huynh and Sanae Ohta of Troy 8-2.
Stephens and Verboven followed up with an 8-7 win against Rika Muller and Jennifer Pfeifler of Auburn in the quarterfinals. They will face the No. 1 seed and No. 1 ranked team in the nation, Erin Routliffe and Maya Jansen (Alabama), who defeated El Kamash and Hartono 8-1, in the semifinals Sunday morning.
In the afternoon, four Rebels took to the courts in singles and both senior Julia Jones and freshman Arianne Hartono won both their matches to advance to the quarterfinals.
Hartono continues her outstanding play this fall, first downing Alabama's Aryn Greene 6-2, 6-1 and then taking out the No. 3 seed, 45th-ranked Routliffe of Alabama 6-4, 6-0.
With two more wins, Hartono improved to 6-0 on the season. She will face LSU's Joana Vale Costa, the No. 5 seed, Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Vale Costa is ranked No. 61.
Sixth-seeded Jones, competing in her first tournament of the fall, survived an exciting third round match against Alabama's Natalia Maynetto. After dropping the first set 6-3, Jones, ranked No. 72 in the nation, battled back to win two tiebreakers 7-6(4), 7-6(4). In the round of 16, she had enough energy left to beat Sanae Ohta of Troy 6-1, 6-4.
Jones will face the No. 2 seed, Georgianna Patrasc of Mississippi State in the quarterfinals Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Patrasc is ranked No. 42.
