Jones Reaches USTA/ITA Regional Final

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - In her first tournament of the fall, Ole Miss Women's Tennis senior Julia Jones will play for the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Singles Championship Monday, winning twice Sunday to reach the final.
Jones, seeded No. 6, will face top-seeded Pleun Burgmans of Auburn in the final Monday at Noon, with a berth in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships on the line.
In the quarterfinals early Sunday, Jones, ranked No. 72 in the nation, rallied to defeat 42nd-ranked Georgina Petrasc of Mississippi State 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-3. Later in the semifinals, Jones downed 61st-ranked Joana Vale Costa of LSU 6-0, 6-3.
Jones' quarterfinal win marked the second time of the tournament for her to rally from dropping the first set. She is now 5-0 on the season.
"Very impressive day for Julia, beating two very good players to advance to the final," head coach Mark Beyers said. "She has been very resilient this tournament coming back from a set down twice."
This marks the fourth time in the last five years for the Rebels to have a singles finalist at the USTA/ITA Regionals.
Freshman Arianne Hartono almost made it an all Ole Miss semifinal, taking Vale Costa to three sets before losing 6-3 in the third for just her first loss of the year.
The day began with doubles, and the tandem of Erin Stephens and Iris Verboven facing the No. 1 team in the nation, Erin Routliffe and Maya Jansen of Alabama. It was a hotly contested match played best two of three sets. The Rebel duo won the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6(11), but the Alabama pair took the second set 6-3. The third set was played as a supertiebreaker, which Alabama won 10-6.
