BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - On the heels of another tremendous defensive effort by the undefeated Ole Miss Rebels, senior Cody Prewitt has been named SEC Defensive Player of the Week and freshman Marquis Haynes has been tabbed SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week.
No. 3 Ole Miss led then-No. 14 Texas A&M 35-7 in the fourth quarter in front of an SEC record crowd of 110,000 at Kyle Field before the Aggies scored a pair of late touchdowns in a 35-20 Rebel victory.
Prewitt was a big part of shutting down one of the league's top offenses, as he returned an interception 75 yards for his first career touchdown. The free safety from Bay Springs, Mississippi, led a Rebel defense that limited the Aggies to their lowest point total of the year and shut them out in the first half for the first time in the Kevin Sumlin era.
Prewitt also notched seven tackles. His 11th career interception tied him for seventh-most in school history. Ole Miss' three pick-sixes are tied for first in the nation this year.
He was also named the National Defensive Back of the Week by College Football Performance Awards.
A true freshman seeing major minutes at defensive end, Haynes had a pair of sacks among his four tackles in College Station. The Jacksonville, Florida, native leads the team and ranks fifth in the SEC with four sacks this season.
