Coach McRoberts Press Conference: 10.27

10/27/2014 | Volleyball

Oct. 27, 2014 Ole Miss head coach Steven McRoberts met with members of the media Monday to discuss last week's matches and preview the re-match with South Carolina. The Rebels will host South Carolina Sunday at 1 p.m. in a nationally-televised match on the SEC Network.

Opening statement…
"Last Wednesday we hosted LSU. We had a great crowd. The last few weeks there have been great crowds at the Gillom Center. I hope that we can continue that. It really does help our play and lift our energy up. We played an LSU team that is really on a roll right now. They were just coming off of a win against No. 15 Kentucky, at Kentucky. LSU came in with a lot of confidence. We were just coming off of our biggest win against Alabama who is top 30 in the RPI. Everyone came in with a lot of confidence. LSU made an outstanding play at set point to win the first set. I think that really deflated some of our energy. I felt as though the rest of the match LSU did a good job of controlling us and they got the sweep.

We traveled to Tennessee on Saturday to play on Sunday. Before yesterday Tennessee did not have their first win in the conference. I had watched them before and knew that they had some talent and the ability to win a match in conference. Something we talked about as a team was, a lot of times when you are playing a team like that they are just waiting for an opportunity for someone to overlook them. They want someone to come in lackadaisical and I felt as though we did that. I will take responsibility for that loss as a head coach. We have to have a better mentality day in and day out."

On handling success …
"Something that I have expressed to a few people is I think it is easier for teams that have consistently won to handle losing, than for a team that has consistently lost to handle winning. That is where I feel like we are right now. We are not handling success very well. We are not handling it in our overall, everyday, preparation to know that the reason we had success is because we have been practicing hard. Our players have been coachable. We talk about how the details in winning are so important, especially when you get to SEC play. We have not been handling that very well."

On next match vs. South Carolina …
"We have a week to regroup. We host South Carolina this Sunday, another SEC Network match. Hopefully we can get another good crowd in the gym. This is a team we had match point on in the fourth set at their place, but we let a win slip away. We will be looking forward to it this week. We are at the halfway point of SEC play. We are 4-5 and eighth in the conference. It is going to be a tough run. We play a lot of teams who are vying for, not only a top place in the conference, but for a place in the NCAA tournament. Hopefully we can get on a run and consider ourselves in that group, too."
