Laporte Leads Rebels in Loss to Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Junior Ty Laporte and senior Marie-Pierre Bakima notched career days in kills and digs respectively, but the Ole Miss volleyball team fell to Missouri 3-2 (25-23, 21-25, 25-23, 25-27, 15-6) here Sunday at Hearnes Arena in a nationally-televised match on the SEC Network.

The Rebels held a 23-22 lead in the fourth set up 2-1 in the match, but the Tigers converted on their fourth set point to send the match to a fifth set. Missouri got off to a fast start and never looked back, winning it 15-6 to clinch the 3-2 win.

Laporte recorded a career-high 23 kills on a .439 clip. Bakima notched a career-best 24 digs. Aubrey Edie had 51 assists. The Rebels hit just .193 on 32 errors, while Missouri hit .362 with just 11 errors.

Set one was a game of momentum changes. The Rebels got off to a 5-2 lead, but the Tigers answered going on an 11-3 run to take a 13-8 advantage, as Coach McRoberts called timeout. Following the timeout, the Rebels used a 6-1 run to tie it at 14. Mizzou followed with a 5-1 run to go up 20-15 forcing the Rebels to call their final timeout. At 23-23, Laporte grabbed two of her four kills in the set to give Ole Miss the early lead in the match 25-23.

Mizzou led most of set two until the Rebels tied it up at 15. A 6-1 run allowed the Tigers to regain a 21-16 lead. The Rebels used a 5-0 run to cut into the lead 21-20, but Mizzou won four of the final four points to take the set 25-21 and even the match at 1.

At the media timeout in the third set, Mizzou led 15-12, but the Rebels went on a 4-1 run to cut it to one, 17-16, before the Tigers called timeout. After Mizzou gained a 22-20 lead, Coach McRoberts called timeout. Following the timeout, the Rebels won two straight points, including an ace from Melanie Crow. The Tigers won the next point, but Laporte stepped up and sent it right down the middle to tie it at 23. Freshman Taylor Alexander had a hand in the final two points, with a huge kill and a double-block with Edie for the win 25-23 to give the Rebels a 2-1 lead.

With a 2-1 lead in hand, the Rebels started off the fourth set 5-1 and forced Mizzou to use a timeout. Following the timeout, the Tigers went on a 5-1 run to tie it at 6. With the Rebels up 13-10, the Tigers won three straight to tie it. The two teams battled back and forth the rest of the way with neither team gaining more than a two point lead. The Rebels held a 23-22 lead, but the Tigers answered and had three set points, finally converting the third one on an attack error by the Rebels to win the set 27-25 and square the match at two, setting up the final showdown for the match.

The Rebels return home for their final four regular season matches, beginning with No. 7 Florida Friday, Nov. 21 at 6:30 p.m.
