OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss has added Decatur, Mississippi, native and middle infielder Ashton Lampton from Newton County High School to the 2015 recruiting class, head coach Mike Smith announced on Wednesday.
Lampton is the third announced member of the recruiting class, joining outfielders Kylan Becker (Miami, Florida) and Megan Harris (Whitehouse, Texas) as a part of the group that will be eligible to compete with the Rebels beginning in the 2015-16 academic year.
"Ashton is a sparkplug in the infield but can really be a utility player and we may look to use her in that role," Smith said. "She has a great work ethic and always has a smile on her face. She's always wanted to play at Ole Miss and is as excited to have the opportunity to play here as we are to have her. She brings speed and versatility with her. She has a strong arm and a knack for the game with all of those traits that are hard to teach."
Lampton has been a varsity starter for the Newton County High School softball team for the past seven years and has put together a solid career in that time. She holds a .515 career batting average with a .826 slugging percentage, 20 home runs, 46 doubles and 29 triples. She also has tallied 181 RBI.
The middle infielder has helped lead Newton County High School to three Class 4A state championships in fastpitch softball, including state titles in 2011, 2013 and 2014. She earned All-State honors from the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) all three of those seasons and is a two-time MHSAA State of Mississippi All-State Team selection (2012, 2013).
In addition, Lampton was named a first team All-America selection by MaxPreps.com in 2014 and was a Mississippi Association of Coaches All-Star selection. She was also a member of the inaugural softball Dandy Dozen team selected by the Clarion Ledger in 2014.
Lampton has competed in travel ball with Florida Team Mizuno-Morgan, winning the 2014 Triple Crown FIREWORKS 18U championship.
