OXFORD, Miss. - If you are spending Thanksgiving in Oxford and getting ready for the Egg Bowl, kick off the festivities Wednesday night at the Gillom Sports Center with Ole Miss Volleyball. The Rebels host Georgia at 6 p.m., followed by another big match with Texas A&M Friday at 4 p.m.
UPCOMING PROMOTIONS …
Wednesday is International Student Night. Students can enter-to-win a chance to participate in the fourth annual Turkey Bowling at halftime. Enjoy Black Friday with the Rebels as they host Texas A&M and register to win prizes during every timeout.
REBELS AT A GLANCE …
• Ole Miss split a pair of matches this weekend, dropping a 3-1 decision to No. 6 Florida and defeating Alabama 3-2, both at home. The Rebels improved to 3-2 in five-set matches this season.
• The Rebels swept the season series against Alabama and have now won six of the last nine meetings.
• It was a record-setting weekend for two Rebels. On Friday, junior Nakeyta Clair set the single season record for kills (337) with nine on the night. Sunday, sophomore Melanie Crow set the single season service aces record (35) with a career-high five.
• With an 11-3 record at the Gillom Sports Center this year, the Rebels are one win away from equaling the most home wins in a season. In 2007, the Rebels went 12-2 at home.
SCOUTING GEORGIA …
• Georgia comes into the match with a 13-16 overall record, 5-12 in the SEC. The Bulldogs are coming off a split of last weekend's matches, defeating Mississippi State 3-1 and falling to South Carolina 3-1.
• The Bulldogs are led by outside hitter Tirah Le'au, who became the 17th Bulldog to notch 1,000 kills for her career and has 300 this season for an average of 2.70.
DOWN GOES TWO MORE RECORDS …
First it was sophomore setter Aubrey Edie setting the single season assists record (1,222). Last weekend, junior middle blocker Nakeyta Clair and sophomore outside hitter Melanie Crow joined her in the record-breaking category. Clair set the single season kills record (337) with nine against No. 6 Florida. Crow recorded five service aces Sunday in the win against Alabama to set the single season record (35).
COULD ANOTHER RECORD FALL? …
With a win against Georgia, the Rebels could equal the most home wins (12) in school history, and two wins this week, would give the Rebels the most home wins in school history.
QUOTING COACH McROBERTS …
"We have still a lot to play for. We have a chance to move up to sixth in the SEC. You never know if we win out and get a little bit of help and the RPI plays in our favor, we could get an NCAA at-large bid. We want to invite everyone in town for Thanksgiving and the Egg Bowl to come out and help give us that home court advantage both Wednesday and Friday."
FINAL HURRAH FOR THREE SENIORS …
These last two home matches mark the final time for seniors Marie-Pierre Bakima, Cara Fisher and Rachael Weathersby to run onto the court at the Gillom Sports Center. The Rebels will honor the three prior to the Texas A&M match. All three have been a part of changing the culture of Ole Miss volleyball.
