11/4/2014 | Volleyball
Mississippi State NotesOXFORD, Miss. - The second half of the SEC volleyball schedule commences this week with Ole Miss heading to Starkville Wednesday, looking to sweep the season series with arch-rival Mississippi State. The two teams will square off in Newell-Grissom at 5 p.m., in a nationally-televised match on ESPNU.
The Rebels (19-5, 5-5) are coming off a 3-0 shutout of South Carolina at home Sunday, while the Bulldogs (6-20, 1-10) fell to Auburn 3-1 at home last Friday.
This will mark the fourth meeting between the two schools to be televised on ESPNU with Ole Miss holding a 2-1 edge.
REBELS AT A GLANCE ...
• The Rebels have posted the most wins since the 2010 season, when they finished 19-11. A win against Mississippi State would give the Rebels 20 wins for the first time since 2007.
• Ole Miss earned its first win of the season when hitting below .200 thanks to a strong defensive effort of 52 digs, including three players in double digits.
• The Rebels improved to 19-1 when outhitting their opponent.
• Junior Nakeyta Clair recorded three blocks against South Carolina to bring her career total to 299. She needs just one more to become the second player in school history to record 300 in a career in the rally scoring era.
SCOUTING MISSISSIPPI STATE ...
• The Bulldogs edged Tennessee 3-2 on Oct. 17 for their lone conference win.
• MSU is led by Payton Harris who averages an SEC-leading 6.40 digs per set.
REBELS VS. MISSISSIPPI STATE ...
• In the previous meeting in Oxford on Oct. 12, the Rebels shut out the Bulldogs 3-0 and lead the overall series 64-27. The Rebels have won seven of the last eight meetings.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Steven McRoberts ...
"Any time you play your rival, you can throw out the records. We are expecting a rowdy crowd there, so we'll need to get off to a good start. They are playing better than the first time we played them, so we're going to have to play well to beat them."
