FLUSHING, N.Y. - Senior Julia Jones of the Ole Miss Women's Tennis team dropped her opening match at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships Thursday to Virginia's Stephanie Nauta at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Nauta, ranked No. 32 in the nation, got off to a fast start against Jones and never let up, winning the first set 6-1. In the second set, Jones fought back couldn't quite get there, dropping it 6-3 as Nauta advanced to the round of 16.
"It was a tough match for Julia," head coach Mark Beyers said. "She lost a few very close games early on. Nauta played a very solid match and didn't give Julia much. Julia fought back but it wasn't enough in the end."
Jones, ranked No. 72, will face Valentine Confalonieri of Lynn University in consolation play Friday at 1:45 p.m. CT.
The USTA/ITA National Indoor features 32 of the top players in the nation vying for the year's second national title.
