FLUSHING, N.Y. - After a tough opening round loss in the first round of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships, senior Julia Jones of the Ole Miss Women's Tennis bounced back with a straight set win against the top-ranked player in Division 2 here Friday at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Jones defeated Valentine Confalonieri of Lynn University 6-1, 7-5 to improve to 9-2 on the year. Confalionieri was ranked No. 1 in the Division 2 and won the Small College Championships to earn a bid to the national indoors.
"This was a good solid win for Julia," head coach Mark Beyers said. "There are no easy matches here at this tournament, and today was no exception. This gives her another opportunity against a highly ranked player tomorrow."
Jones, ranked No. 72, will face Vanderbilt sophomore Sydney Campbell, who is ranked No. 50, in the second round Saturday at 8 a.m. CT. If Jones wins her first match she would play again in the afternoon.
The USTA/ITA National Indoor features 32 of the top players in the nation vying for the year's second national title.
