COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Ole Miss softball team got off to a strong start and took a one-run lead into the final inning in Columbia, S.C., but fell 7-6 to South Carolina on a windy and sunny Sunday afternoon at Carolina Softball Stadium at Beckham Field.

Senior first baseman Londen Ladner led Ole Miss (19-18, 3-9 Southeastern Conference) at the plate, going 2-4 with four RBIs, one run scored and one home run. It was the fourth game this season in which Ladner has driven in four or more runs in a game.

With runners on first and second, Ladner hit an RBI single up the middle to bring home senior outfielder RT Cantillo. Redshirt freshman second baseman Alyssa Invergo then hit a single to right field, but sophomore shortstop Haley Culley was thrown out at the plate on a well-executed relay by the Gamecocks.

South Carolina (22-12, 5-7 SEC) threatened in the second with two runners in scoring position, but senior pitcher Carly Hummel ended the threat with her second strikeout of the inning, preserving the Rebels' 1-0 lead.

Ladner added to her strong day at the plate with a three-run home run in the third inning, scoring Culley and junior third baseman Allison Brown, who led off the inning with back-to-back singles. It was Ladner's team-high sixth home run of the season.

The Gamecocks got one run back in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff home run by Kaylea Snaer to left-center.

The Rebels loaded the bases in the top of the fifth on three walks, and then brought in two runs on a ground ball by Cantillo that resulted in two Gamecock errors, giving Ole Miss a 6-1 lead.

South Carolina began its rally in the bottom of the fifth with four runs on four hits to pull within one at 6-5. The Gamecocks then won the game in the seventh by scoring two runs on one hit.

The Rebels will now have a week off from game action before taking the diamond again April 7 for a doubleheader on the road at Southeastern Louisiana at 3 and 5 p.m. CT.
