El Kamash Wins Twice at All-American
9/27/2014 | Women's Tennis
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Ole Miss Women's Tennis junior Mai El Kamash won both her matches Saturday in pre-qualifying at the Riviera ITA All-American Championships to advance to the final round Sunday.
After a dominating first round match, El Kamash won a three-setter against Portland University's Lucia Butkovska. El Kamash cruised 6-2 in the first set, but Butkovska rallied to take the second set 6-2. With Butkovska having gone three in her first round match, it was obvious El Kamash was the fresher of the two out there, as she jumped out to an early lead and held for 6-3.
In her first match of the day, El Kamash dominated the No. 6 seed, Trestan Dewar of Clemson, 6-3, 6-0. After gaining a big lead in the first set, El Kamash closed it out and then jumped on Dewar early in the second set and never let up.
"Mai showed a lot of mental toughness today and battled very well," associate head coach Jason Ontog said. "The level of play was very high and she really rose to the challenge."
This marks the second year in a row for El Kamash to advance to the final round. A win Sunday, will put her into the qualifying tournament, which begins Tuesday.
