1/11/2015 | Men's Tennis
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Ole Miss men's tennis team began their first week of the season with the exciting news that senior and reigning SEC Player of the Year, Nik Scholtz, would be returning for his final campaign, and ended it Sunday by sweeping the host school in doubles to conclude play at the FGCU Invitational.
The teams were able to finish the doubles before rain came. Due to continued rain throughout the day singles between the two teams was cancelled.
Freshman Zvonimir Babic and junior Joe Rogers teamed up to defeat Andres and Eudardo Alfonzo 6-4. Senior William Kallberg and freshman Gustav Hansson downed Lucas Vaz and Austin Bates 6-2 to finish the weekend 5-1. They are now 8-2 on the year.
Junior Stefan Lindmark and sophomore Ricardo Jorge cruised to a 6-2 win against Michael Beiler and Chris Perrigan. Zach Wilder and Vinod Gowda beat Ricky Ventura and Sam Chaffin to close out play.
All total, the Rebels finished the weekend with 23 wins in singles and doubles and posted several ranked victories as well, including defeating two top-20 teams in doubles.
The Rebels will head to Orlando, Florida for their dual match opener against UCF Jan. 16. The two teams will square off at 1 p.m. CT at the UCF Tennis Complex.
