Ole Miss Football Postgame Quotes

Ole Miss vs. New Mexico State

Vaught-Hemingway Stadium â€" Oxford, Miss.

Oct. 10, 2015

Ole Miss Head Coach Hugh Freeze

Opening Statement…

"It was good to get back on the field and see our kids compete. It was good to play at home in front of our crowd in an early game. Hopefully we can use that time to rest and recover. There were some good individual efforts in this game. There were also some things that we need to continue to improve on. It is our job to as coaches to do that and address those things, and then hopefully demand where to make corrections if necessary. In this profession, you have to enjoy those wins that you have. You have a short window to enjoy it while before you get to move on. I plan on going home today, watching some games and eating vegetable soup with my family. Hopefully the other coaches will do the same. Then, we will get back tomorrow and continue to improve."

On the injuries in today's game…

"D.J. Jones was out in the second half. Evan Engram was out. It is too early for me to say on either of those, but those are the only two that I'm worried about from today."

On cleaning up play…

"I really have to do a better job with some things. I think this team needs and wants me to be more passionate. I need to be full of emotion for them. Some teams don't react to that, but these guys do. Here's the deal with this team, and our coaching staff, we have got to understand the amount of energy and focus that it takes to put into every single play in order for each one to be successful. Then we have to forget it and move on. Every single play has a life of it's own. You never know when a play is going to be a turning point in competitive football games, which is all we are about to see for the remainder of the year. I am so locked in right now to the one's that aren't turning points. It is one thing for a team to have a successful play when schematically a guy is there. It is a whole other thing for us to lineup and not execute the plan and it causes us a negative play. Whether it is the punt return team, or the offense blowing a blocking assignment or the defense blowing their coverage, we still have these problems going on. We have to come in tomorrow and look at every single one of them as a coach and ask if they are doing everything they can. We have to ask ourselves the same thing as coaches. We did a lot of good things today and we are going to enjoy this victory, but there are still some critical areas or moments in the game where we do not execute properly."

#38, Mike Hilton, DB

On the game …

"It feels good to get a win under our belts. We got that sour taste out of our mouths. You can tell the locker room has a lot more energy and enthusiasm like we did earlier this season. We're just trying to keep the momentum rolling."

On moving back to huskie…

"I'm just closer to the ball which I feel is one my strengths, taking on linemen using my quickness and still being able to get the ball carrier. It plays into my strengths."

On his interception…

"He ran a crossing route and the QB rolled out to the opposite side and threw against his body. I knew it was either going to be underthrown or thrown out of bounds. I undercut it and made a play when I had chance."

#1, Laquon Treadwell, WR

On scoring two touchdowns…

"It feels great, but I don't want to make this about me today, I just want to be humble about it and know we can get so much better. I left a few plays on the field and I just want to make it up."

On the one-handed catch…

"I got pushed off my route, and knew I couldn't let it affect me, so I couldn't get two [hands] on it. I just stuck out one and was able to let out my passion I have for the game when I got in the end zone because I had dropped a lot of balls that I should be catching and I just needed a stepping stone."

On drops…

"I'm a competitor, and I feel that any ball that hits my hands shouldn't be dropped. I know the standard I hold myself to, and drops aren't living up to that. I've been putting too much pressure on myself and making it hard on myself. I just need to relax and play football."

#10, Chad Kelly, QB

On the win…

"There's a lot of smiling going on around here. We just have to get better, and we did that today. The offensive line did great, receivers ran great routes, and running backs ran hard. It was a good day."

On the game…

"It felt great, the wide receivers helped a lot running great routes, the line had great protection. I just have to make sure I make good calls before the play to make sure everything works out right."

On the team…

"We have to make sure we execute every play and do what Coach Freeze said at halftime, to play every play as it's own play and not worry about what happened before or what will happen after."

On Memphis matchup…

"They'll be good, they're undefeated, a good team for sure, nobody can stop us except for ourselves and we just have to make sure we keep getting better.

New Mexico State Head Coach Doug Martin

Opening remarks…

"Our kids played really hard. We played an elite football team, and they have more weapons than we do right now. Our quarterback situation is a work in progress right now, but we have seven football games coming up in the Sun Belt and we're good enough to win all seven of them. We just have to prepare the right way and solve the quarterback thing."

On the quarterbacks…

"We had a really hard time blocking (Ole Miss), as everybody has. It was hard to tell for those guys, but I think they both did good things. Andrew (Allen) made some big plays, but the turnovers are concerning. Nick (Jeanty) did a good job of taking care of the ball, but he's hesitant sometimes to pull the trigger and make a play. It's hard to tell when you're playing a team like Ole Miss though and the defensive pressure they put on you."

On the positives of the game…

"Though we turned the ball over twice, we still won the turnover margin taking three away. The other thing was third down offensively. We actually performed pretty well, and that's kind of been our Achilles heal so we're getting there."

On the remainder of the season…

"We had some things today we wanted to improve on going into the game. The turnover margin and third downs on both sides of the ball were the things we were looking at. When you play a team that is as talented as (Ole Miss) they'll make you better if you handle it the right way. I thought we did do some things where we got better. I told the players after the game we have seven games left and they're all Sun Belt games and we can when any of them if we go prepare and play like we are capable of."
