OXFORD, Miss. - The Rebel offense broke out on Wednesday night as Ole Miss (15-8) set the school record for hits in a game and tied the school record for runs in a game on the way to a doubleheader sweep of Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-14).
The Rebels picked up an 8-0 victory over the Lady Lions in game one of the afternoon before coming back to claim a 22-3 win in game two. The 22 runs tied the record for runs in a game, a mark last hit in the 2008 season against Alcorn State, and set the record for hits in a game with 21 in game two of the afternoon.
"We came out energized and excited to play softball again at home, especially considering we've only had one game here before tonight," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Smith. "Kayla (Landwehrmier) got an opportunity to pitch and threw well for five innings with the exception of one pitch. Lauren (Lindsey) just went out and did what she does for us.
"We got an opportunity to get a lot of at bats for a lot of people and they stepped up," Smith said. "We're ready to carry that momentum into the Auburn weekend as we play our first home series in the SEC this weekend."
Ole Miss will host No. 12 Auburn in a three-game series this weekend that will run from Saturday through Monday. Saturday's series opener will be broadcast at 6 p.m. on the SEC Network+ digital platform, while Sunday's 4:30 p.m. game will be televised on ESPNU and Monday night's 6 p.m. finale will be on the SEC Network as the SEC Game of the Week.
OLE MISS 8, UAPB 0 (6 INNINGS - GAME 1)
Senior left-hander Lauren Lindsey (4-1) picked up the win for the Rebels in game one of the afternoon, allowing one hit through 4.0 innings with a strikeout as Ole Miss picked up the run-rule victory over the Lady Lions.
Ole Miss notched 12 hits in the game, including 2-for-3 performances from Elantra Cox and Bri Payne. Cox added a run scored and an RBI, while Payne scored a run.
The scoring started with a single run in the second inning on an RBI single up the middle from Grayce Majam that brought Courtney Syrett home from second. Syrett reached on a lead-off single and moved into scoring position on a single from Paige McKinney before the Majam hit.
The Rebels added three runs in the third inning on an RBI double from Alex Schneider that also featured a throwing error that allowed Schneider to score on the play and took the lead out to 4-0 in favor of the home team.
Two more runs came home in the fourth inning with RBI singles from Cox and Miranda Strother, before the Rebels would put the finishing touches on the game with RBI hits from Payne and Danae King and claim the shortened game.
OLE MISS 22, UAPB 3 (5 INNINGS - GAME 2)
Freshman Kayla Landwehrmier (1-0) picked up the win for the Rebels in game two, allowing three runs on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts in her first start. The three runs for UAPB came on a three-run home run in the third inning.
Ole Miss used powerful at bats of its own to claim the win and the doubleheader sweep, batting around in three innings and belting out four home runs of its own on the way to the win.
Junior Natalie Martinez tied a school record for home runs in a game with two - a three-run shot and a two-run shot - while matching the school record for RBI in a game at six with an RBI double added into the mix. Freshman Aimilia McDonough got in on the long-ball action herself with her first home run to open the fourth inning of play, while junior Haley Culley hit her first home run of the season in the third with a two-run shot.
The Rebels put six runs on the board in the first and three runs on the board in the second before powering to a big eight-run third inning. Ole Miss then capped the scoring with a five-run fourth inning before closing out the game in the fifth to secure the doubleheader sweep.
