Rebels Wrap Up Play at Schenkel Invitational
3/21/2015 | Men's Golf
STATESBORO, Ga. - Junior Forrest Gamble notched six birdies in his final round en route to a 69 at the Schenkel Invitational Saturday. The second and third rounds were moved to Saturday because of expected inclement weather Sunday.
Gamble, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, carded six birdies in his final round, including three straight on holes No. 3-5, on his way to a 3-under par 69 at the Forest Heights Country Club. Gamble posted 1-over 73 in the second round earlier in the day that included five birdies and tied in a tie for 40th. Ole Miss finished 14th in the team standings with a score of 7-over par 871.
Senior Joe Lewis, who is competing as an individual, fired a 1-under par 71 in the second round, which included five birdies, after posting a 2-under 70 in the opening round yesterday. Lewis carded an eagle on the 511-yar, par-5 No. 6 in the final round to finish even par. He finished the tournament tied for 31st with a 3-under par total of 213.
"It was a very disappointing tournament to say the least," said Ole Miss head coach Chris Malloy. "We just didn't get anything going early on in our rounds and never recovered. We need to get back home and regroup before our final stretch of tournaments. We will get better and be ready to play in our next event."
Sophomore Ben Wolcott carded back-to-back rounds of even-par 72 after yesterday's opening round 73 to finish tied for 45th with a three-round score of 217. Wolcott posted eight birdies in the final two rounds, including five in the second round. Freshman Josh Seiple, who entered the day tied for 17th after yesterday's opening round 70, posted a 4-over 76 in the second round, before bouncing back with an even-par 72 in the final round to finish in a tie for 50th at 218.
Senior Blake Morris also bounced back after posting rounds of 75 and 74 with a final round 1-under 71 that included four birdies on the back nine to finish tied for 62nd. Junior Connor Davis finished tied for 84th after rounds of 77 and 79 on the final day.
Next up, Ole Miss will travel to West Point, Mississippi for the Old Waverly Invitational hosted by Mississippi State April 6-7.
