Ole Miss Tees Off at SEC Championships
4/17/2015 | Men's Golf
OXFORD, Miss. -- Junior Forrest Gamble and sophomore Ben Wolcott each carded a 1-over par 71 to lead Ole Miss in the opening round of the SEC Golf Championships at the Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simmons Island, Georgia Friday.
Gamble and Wolcott each finished the day 1-over par on the 7,005 yard, par-70 course that hosted the SEC Championships every year since 2001. Both players carded three birdies in the opening round and are tied for 34th heading into tomorrow's second round. Ole Miss is 13th on the team leaderboard after day one with an 8-over par 288.
"It was a very disappointing start for sure," said Ole Miss head coach Chris Malloy. "We didn't seem to be aggressive early on and the golf course was certainly playing easy. We need to do a better job of taking advantage of the easier holes. We also need at least one guy to step up and get it rolling and have that confidence spread throughout the team. There is a lot of golf left, and I look forward to seeing how these guys respond over the next two rounds."
Senior Blake Morris and freshman Josh Seiple are both tied for 49th after finishing the day with a 3-over par 73, while sophomore Noah West carded a 5-over 75 in the first round and is tied for 66th.
