Rebels Atop the Leaderboard After Day One in Hoover
3/23/2015 | Women's Golf
HOOVER, Ala. - The Ole Miss women's golf team wrapped up a great first day at the Samford Intercollegiate Monday in Hoover Alabama and is in first place heading into the final day of the two-day tournament.
On their way to the first place spot, the Rebels posted team scores of 308 and 302, and has three players in the top five in the individual standings. Ole Miss' second round score of two-round score of 610 is the fifth-lowest two round score for the Rebels.
Head coach Michele Drinkard is pleased with Monday's performance and looks to continue the success into Tuesday.
"Today was a fun day on the course," Drinkard said. "We are improving, and it's great to see their hard work pay off."
Leading the way for Ole Miss are juniors Alison Hovatter (Meridianville, Ala.) and Abby Newton (Katy, Texas) who sit tied for first after solid day one performances.
Hovatter carded a 2-over par 74 in her first 18 holes, followed by a 3-over par 75 continuing her success at Hoover Country Club.
"It felt great to be back home in Alabama and have the support of my mom and swing coach here today," Hovatter said. "This course is special to me, and no matter what, I know I'll enjoy and embrace tomorrow."
Newton carded a 9-over par 81 before bouncing back and matching her career best with a 4-under par 68 to join Hovatter at the top.
"I just did my best to stay calm and patient out there," Newton said. "I was able to give myself plenty of opportunities, and I took advantage of them."
Also in the top-five of the standings is senior Stani Schiavone (Bangor, Pa.) who fired a 4-over par 76 and a 2-over par 74 to take sole possession of 5th place going into the final day.
"I played fairly consistently today, and made a few putts that helped keep my rounds going," Schiavone said.
Coach Drinkard was a proud coach after the first day, and is pleased going into the second day in Hoover.
"Alison and Stani had a solid day," Drinkard said. "Both are grinders out there and they give everything they have on every shot. Abby found her rhythm during the second round, and capitalized on some great iron shots with six birdies."
The Rebels hit the course at Hoover Country Club for the second day of the Samford Intercollegiate on Tuesday morning.
