Rebels Drop Finale To No. 12 Georgia
4/12/2015 | Softball
OXFORD, Miss. -- The Rebels got another solid pitching performance Sunday, but couldn't solve the puzzle of Georgia pitching as Ole Miss (23-19, 5-13 SEC) fell to No. 12 Georgia (35-10, 11-7 SEC) by a score of 4-0 in the series finale.
Madi Osias (7-11) allowed four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits with two walks and a strikeout through 4.1 innings in the loss, while Kayla Landwehrmier worked 2.1 hitless innings in relief against the Bulldogs.
Chelsea Wilkinson (21-6) picked up the win for Georgia, allowing three hits in 7.0 innings of work with three walks and six strikeouts.
"I thought it was a great played ballgame all around," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Smith. "The home run set the table for them with a pitch we didn't get inside enough and their hitter got a hold of it. I thought we battled against the No. 12 team in the country and that's the main thing. I'm so impressed with the fight and resiliency this team has shown. We battled and we put pressure on them late. I'm proud of what we're doing and getting better. We're learning from our losses. It sucks to lose, but we're learning and I hope that helps in the present and in the future with our program."
Georgia struck first, breaking the stalemate in the fourth inning when Tina Iosefa hit a two-run shot to left center to put the Bulldogs on top 2-0. Niaja Griffin scored on the play, reaching on a single down the third base line in the previous at bat.
The Bulldogs added to the lead in the fifth inning, taking advantage of a throwing error on a ball back to the circle with two runners on base to start a second rally. With runners at first and second, Anna Swafford lay down a bunt single back to the circle. A throwing error on the play allowed the lead runner to come home and put two runners in scoring position.
Paige Wilson then hit a line drive single off the glove of a diving Alex Schneider at first to bring a second run home and Georgia led 4-0 before the Rebels would get out of the inning.
Ole Miss attempted to mount a rally in the sixth inning, but Georgia stranded a runner at third to end the inning and held the Rebels off the board. The Bulldogs squelched a rally attempt again in the seventh following a line drive to left center from Alyssa Invergo with one out and claimed the win.
The Rebels will return to action on Wednesday afternoon, hosting Southern Miss in a doubleheader that will begin at 4 p.m. at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
