BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Ole Miss women's golf team competed in the first round of the SEC Women's Golf Championship Friday at Greystone Golf and Country Club in Birmingham, Alabama.

The Rebels sit in 14th after an opening round 310 on the Legacy Course at Greystone.

"Our team fought hard today," head coach Michele Drinkard said. "I'm proud of them for not letting the rain effect their attitude."

The course has been plagued by bad weather the last couple of days, and the conditions have not been ideal for the tournament.

"The fairways deteriorated the last nine holes, and it became very hard to find a dry spot to drop," Drinkard said. "Most of the day we played from casual water."

Leading the way for Ole Miss was freshman Sofia Idoyaga (Buenos Aires, Argentina) who fired a 2-over par 74. Her round included three birdies with 14 holes at par or better.

"I felt confident with my game today, and I think I played pretty well considering the weather conditions," Idoyaga said. "I'm looking forward to having a great day at the course tomorrow with my teammates."

Also having a good day was senior Stani Schiavone (Bangor, Pa.) who fired a 3-over par 75. Schiavone carded six straight pars and also had two birdies in her opening round.

"With the tough weather conditions I had to scramble today," Schiavone said. "Fortunately I made some good up and downs to keep my round going. We're just looking forward to getting out there tomorrow and trying our best."

Drinkard liked what she saw from Idoyaga and Schiavone throughout the first round.

"They played really well," Drinkard said. "They hit a lot of greens and made a lot of pars."

The Rebels hit the course again for the second round of the SEC Championship Saturday at 10 a.m. and will be paired with players from Mississippi State. The tournament will continue its shotgun start format due to weather in the area. Fans can follow live scoring here.
