Rebels Drop Doubleheader At No. 2 LSU
4/4/2015 | Softball
BATON ROUGE, La. -- The Rebels couldn't solve the challenge posed by the Tiger pitching staff on Saturday afternoon as Ole Miss (22-16, 5-10 SEC) dropped both games of a doubleheader at No. 2 LSU (36-3, 9-3 SEC) to close out the weekend series.
The Rebels dropped the first game 8-0 in five innings before falling 8-2 in game two of the afternoon.
"We have to be better in the circle," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Smith. "Against teams like this, you can't afford to walk people. We pitch well and then we have a bad inning with some walks, giving up some hits and we miss spots. We were in the ballgame in game two and then we walk three in an inning and you can't do that against good teams. We have to play all three phases of the games well for a full seven innings. When we do, we usually end up in the win column. When we don't we end up in the loss column."
The Rebels return to action on Wednesday, continuing to play on the road with a single game at Samford beginning at 6 p.m.
NO. 2 LSU 8, OLE MISS 0 (5 INNINGS) -- GAME 1
The Rebels dropped the first game of the doubleheader after LSU pushed four runs across the plate in both the third and fourth innings.
Lauren Lindsey (5-5) suffered the loss, allowing six runs -- four of them earned -- on four hits with six walks in 3.0 innings of work. Lindsey worked into the fourth inning, leaving the game with two runners on base as Kayla Landwehrmier took over in the circle.
Carley Hoover (10-2) picked up the win for the Tigers, scattering three hits with seven strikeouts through her 5.0 innings of work.
Ole Miss worked its way out of a jam in the second inning when LSU loaded the bases with two outs and looked to put together a rally with the top of the order back at the plate. The Rebels' Paige McKinney made a catch on the run and got the force out at second to end the inning on a chopper from Bailey Landry to end the inning and keep the Tigers off the board.
The home team got on the board in the third inning, taking advantage of a fielding error on a fly ball to deep centerfield to put two on with no outs. Kelsi Kloss then delivered a three-run shot to left field to put the Tigers on top of the Rebels 3-0.
LSU then added a fourth run in the inning when Constance Quinn delivered a solo shot with two outs to the same spot in left to take the Tiger lead out to 4-0.
The Tiger lead grew in the fourth inning when Dylan Supak delivered a two-out, two-RBI single to left field that extended the lead to 6-0. Supak advanced to second on the throw in to third off the hit to leave two in scoring position for LSU's Quinn. The Tiger sophomore drove a two-RBI single to center that brought two more runs home and LSU held an 8-0 lead after the fourth inning of play.
Ole Miss couldn't scratch a run across the plate in the fifth inning as LSU picked up the run-rule win in game one.
NO. 2 LSU 8, OLE MISS 2 -- GAME 2
Madi Osias (6-9) took the loss in game two of the afternoon, allowing four runs on nine hits with two walks and a strikeout.
Allie Walljasper (10-1) picked up the win, allowing the two runs on three hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. Â
The Rebels scored first in game two as Elantra Cox scampered home on a sac bunt from Alex Schneider to put Ole Miss on the board. Cox was hit by a pitch and took second on a fielder's choice to short from Natalie Martinez as the Tigers couldn't get an out on the play. Cox then moved to third on a sac bunt from Miranda Strother to set up the score on the Schneider sacrifice.
LSU got on the board in the third inning, tying the game on a solo shot to right field from A.J. Andrews. The Tigers continued to score from there, taking the lead with a single up the middle and then a double down the right field line from Bianka Bell to move in front of the Rebels 2-1.
Bell advanced to third on a passed ball before coming home on a single up the middle from Sahvanna Jaquish to take the lead out to 3-1 as the Rebels made a visit to the circle to calm things down. The Rebels got out of the inning with no more damage, heading to the fourth down two runs.
A fourth run crossed the plate as the Tigers got three straight hits to open the fifth inning. The Rebels turned to the bullpen, calling in Lindsey to the circle with two on base and no outs in the inning. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position before Ole Miss would turn a double play with a fly out to left that led the Rebels to throwing out the trail runner at second as she wandered too far from the base on the fly ball.
Lindsey and the Rebels got a groundout in the next at bat to end the inning and prevent any further damage in the inning, trailing 4-1 after five complete.
Ole Miss cut into the lead in the sixth when Alyssa Invergo stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter with two runners on base. Invergo delivered a single to center, scoring Strother from second and leaving runners at the corners with the lead halved to 4-2. The Rebels would get no more runs in the inning, leaving two stranded heading to the home half of the sixth.
The Tigers put two on base with one out in the sixth before the Rebels would again change pitchers, this time calling Landwehrmier in from the bullpen. A single loaded the bases in the first batter the freshman faced before a walk would bring a run home. A two-RBI double to left center from Jaquish took the lead out to 7-2 with one out on the board.
An infield single took the lead out to 8-2 before the Rebels would get out of the inning.
Ole Miss couldn't get an answering rally together in the seventh inning as LSU claimed the second game of the afternoon doubleheader.
