Women's Golf Closes Out Rebel Intercollegiate
4/5/2015 | Women's Golf
OXFORD, Miss.--The Ole Miss women's golf team finished up play at the 2015 Rebel Intercollegiate Sunday at the Ole Miss Golf Course in Oxford.
The Rebels finished in 9th place after firing a final round 303, bringing their three-round total to 896. Finishing atop the leaderboard was No. 19 Texas A&M who fired a three-day 858.
"I'm very happy with the momentum we had coming into the tournament and we put together a few solid rounds," head coach Michele Drinkard said. We saw the potential of what we can do, so I feel like we are building momentum at the most important time of the year."
Leading the way for Ole Miss was junior Maria Toennessen (Grimstad, Norway) who finished tied for eighth after a 70-74-72--216 on the weekend.
"I'm really proud of Maria, her eighth place finish and all that she accomplished this week," Drinkard said. "Her putter got on fire there for a little while, and she's really progressing nicely."
Toennessen was happy she was able to play well at home, where she put together the best weekend of her career.
"Today was about keeping it simple, and hanging in there until I got some birdie opportunities," Toennessen said. "It was great to have my best tournament on my home course, and it was great to show everyone how well I've been playing."
Freshman Sofia Idoyaga (Buenos Aires, Argentina) continued her solid weekend with another 1-over par 73 in the final round. The Argentina native's progress impresses Drinkard.
"She put another solid round in today, and she's just maturing under our eyes," Drinkard said. "She's really been able to not let the little things get to her and put them behind her."
Senior Stani Schiavone (Banjor, Pa.) wrapped up her final Rebel Intercollegiate with a 3-over par 75 bringing her three-round total to 221.
"The last couple of days Stani hasn't felt her best, but she's a senior who grinds," Drinkard said. "She gets it done no matter what, even if it's not that pretty."
Schiavone, though not at 100%, was able to put together three solid rounds for her team.
"Today was a round where I had to fight for every shot," Schiavone said. "Though I gave back a few at the end, I was still proud of the way I fought and made some up and downs when I had to."
Ole Miss women's golf would like to extend a thank you to all volunteers who gave their time this weekend during the Rebel Intercollegiate. Also, Ole Miss would like to thank scoring sponsor C Spire Wireless and meal sponsors Funkys, McEwen's and Rib Cage for their continued support.
The Rebels are off next week before they head to the SEC Women's Golf Championship April 17 in Birmingham at Greystone Golf and Country Club.
