Jones Closes Outstanding Career
5/21/2015 | Women's Tennis
WACO, Texas -- Someone once said, "There is no real ending. It's just the place where you stop the story." For Ole Miss women's tennis senior Julia Jones the latest chapter of her life came to a close Thursday in the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship.
Jones' fantastic Ole Miss career came to an end in three sets against California's Sofia Susanyi. After winning the first set 6-4, Jones dropped the second set 6-1. She broke to go up 2-0 in the third, but Susanyi came up with some great defense on several key points to get back on serve and ended up holding on for 6-4 to advance to the round of 16.
"Tough loss today for Julia, but it was a battle out there," head coach Mark Beyers said. "Very windy conditions. Unfortunately, Julia wasn't able to capitalize on some game and break points in the third set, but I have to give Susanyi credit for playing great defense on those key points."
Jones leaves Ole Miss as an All-American, three-time All-SEC honoree and the seventh member of the 100-club (103 singles wins). She also graduated from the University of Mississippi with honors in accountancy. Â
"We are very proud of Julia," Beyers said. "She represented herself and the University of Mississippi very well on and off the court and had a phenomenal career."
