9/11/2015 | Men's Golf
ROCKY FACE, Ga. - Senior Forrest Gamble fired a 2-under par 70 to lead Ole Miss in the first round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate Friday.
The senior posted four birdies and carded an eagle on the 498-yard, par 5 12th hole to finish in a tie for fifth after the first day. As a team, Ole Miss ended the day tied for 6th with Clemson after posting an 8-over 296 and finished ahead of SEC opponents Tennessee and Florida. Host Georgia Tech is in the lead with a 2-under par 286.
"I am extremely proud of Forrest," said Rebel head coach Chris Malloy. "There is nobody that works harder and does all the right things like he does. He is playing extremely good golf right now.
"It was an interesting first round to our season to say the least. The guys did a tremendous job controlling their emotions after a rough patch of holes. The freshman will be fine; they got their first round of collegiate competition under their belt. There is no doubt in my mind that they will play well the next two days. We have to eliminate the big numbers and we will post a great score tomorrow."
Junior Ben Wolcott turned in an opening round 1-over par 73 that included three birdies and finished in a tie for 25th heading into tomorrow's second round. Fellow junior Noah West posted a 4-over 76 and is tied for 41st. Freshman Beau Briggs posted a 5-over 77and is tied for 49th, while fellow freshman Braden Thornberry carded an 85.
The second round will tee off tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. CT. Fans can follow live scoring of second round by clicking the link on the calendar or visiting Golfstat.com.
