9/24/2015 | Women's Tennis
OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's tennis team kicks off the fall season this weekend with some of the team headed to Las Vegas for the UNLV Invitational and the rest of the team going to Little Rock, Arkansas for the Country Club of Little Rock Invitational.
Country Club of Little Rock Invitational
The Country Club of Little Rock Invitational includes players from Arkansas, Oklahoma State and Kansas. Sophomore Arianne Hartono will be going back to defend her title. Last year, the Netherlands native made a splash on the college scene, winning her first tournament title in both singles and doubles in Little Rock. Hartono will be joined in Little Rock by seniors Marija Milutinovic and Allie Robbins and freshmen Tereza Janatova, Tea Jandric and Brooke Stevens.
UNLV Fall Invitational
Heading out west to Las Vegas will be senior Mai El Kamash, junior Zalina Khairudinova, sophomore Natalie Suk and freshman Allie Sanford. The tournament includes players from UNLV, Long Beach State, Northern Arizona and South Alabama and will feature three flights of singles and two flights of doubles.
Quoting Head Coach Mark Beyers
"We've had some very competitive and intense practices, as well as match play. It's very early, but the practice sets and practice matches that we have played have been really competitive, with the new players and the veteran players. I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do when it really counts. It's extremely competitive and we have a great deal of depth on this team. We are looking forward to seeing who is going to step up this fall."
Oracle/ITA Rankings
Three Rebels are represented in the rankings, led by sophomore All-SEC honoree Arianne Hartono, who checks in at No. 57 after a strong freshman debut, briefly interrupted by injury. The Netherlands native finished the 2015 season with an 18-10 record and made the SEC All-Freshman Team. Sophomore Natalie Suk begins the year ranked No. 87. She posted a 15-10 overall record in her first year in 2014. Senior Mai El Kamash finished with a 25-16 record in 2014 and begins her final campaign ranked No. 105 in singles and No. 41 in doubles with Suk.
NCAA Moves to No-Ad Scoring
The NCAA Division I Competition Oversight Committee approved no-ad scoring for all matches of the men's and women's tennis championships starting in 2016, so this year matches will be played with that format. In no-ad scoring, when a game is tied at 40-40, known as deuce, the player who wins the next point wins the game.
