Rebels Take Early Lead in Hawaii

PRINCEVILLE, Hawaii- Three Rebels found the top 10, as the Ole Miss men's golf team jumped out to a five stroke lead at the opening round of the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational Sunday.
Senior Noah West led the charge for the Rebels with six birdies en route to a 4-under 68 in the opening round at the 7,223 yards par-72 Makai Golf Club. The Tupelo, Mississippi native is tied for fourth on the leaderboard and trails the leader Mateusz Gradecki, of East Tennessee State, by three strokes.
"It was another great day for our guys out there," said Ole Miss head coach Chris Malloy. "I am very proud of the way that they battled through some tough conditions and stayed patient when they had to."
Ole Miss leads second place Georgia Southern by five strokes and the Rebels lead three Golfstat.com ranked opponents in Arizona State, Colorado State and Missouri.
Senior Ben Wolcott and sophomore Josh Seiple both end the tied for eighth with a 3-under par 69. Wolcott and Seiple both birdied the 213 yard, par-3 No. 3 and combined for ten birdies on the day. Sophomore Braden Thornberry birdied twice, including the 567yard, par-5 No. 18 to finish with a 1-under 71 and in a tie for 16th. Junior Kerry Sweeney posted a 2-over 74 in the opening round and is tied for 44th overall. Sophomore Beau Briggs, who is competing as an individual, posted three birdies to card a 3-under 69 in the opening round and finished the day in a tie for 29th.
"It's always great when all four of your counting scores are under par," said Malloy. "There is no reason for me to think that we don't have another great two days ahead of us."
