PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Ole Miss women's tennis junior Arianne Hartono began play in the All-American Championships main draw singles Friday, dropping her match to qualifier Lily Miyazaki of Oklahoma, 6-4, 6-0.
Hartono, ranked No. 17 in the nation, led the first set 4-3, before losing three straight games. Miyazaki, ranked No. 77, carried that momentum over to the second set winning 6-0 to complete the upset.
"There are a lot of tough players in this tournament and even though we didn't get the result we wanted, we definitely learned a lot and can improve for the next match," associate head coach Jason Ontog said.
In consolation play, Hartono will face Paige Hourigan of Georgia Tech Friday at 2:30 p.m. CT. If she wins that match, she would play again later in the evening. Harton has an opportunity to pick up some big wins in the back draw, as four of the top eight seeds all lost on the opening day.
June Stewart Invitational
While Hartono is in California, several members of the team are in Nashville, Tennessee for the June Stewart Invitational featuring players from Vanderbilt, Auburn, Kentucky and Middle Tennessee State.
Senior Zalina Khairudinova, sophomores Allie Sanford and Brooke Stevens, and freshmen Cameron Kriscunas and Anna Vrbenska will be competing in Nashville for the Rebels.
Vrbenska went undefeated in singles on the opening weekend of play at the Wolfpack Invitational.
Play begins Friday at 12 p.m. and then 9:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
