Landwehrmier Tosses Gem in 2-0 Shutout Over South Carolina
4/16/2016 | Softball
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Sophomore pitcher Kayla Landwehrmier tossed her second-straight complete game, and she needed just 67 pitches to do it Saturday as she led Ole Miss softball to a 2-0, series-clinching win at South Carolina at Carolina Stadium at Beckham Field.
Landwehrmier, the former outfielder turned pitcher, was dominant in the circle for the Rebels (30-14, 6-8 SEC), going the full seven frames with just three hits allowed and no runs. She also didn't walk a single batter and let her defense do the work with no strikeouts against the Gamecocks (31-12, 4-10).
With the win, Ole Miss ties its single-season school record with 30 victories, which matches the season win totals set last season and in 2005. The six SEC wins also match last year's season total, still with 10 games left to play on the conference slate.
Ole Miss tallied just six hits, but that, and a little help from the South Carolina pitching staff was all it needed to plate two in the third that made the difference.
Grayce Majam got the frame started in the third when she dropped a bloop single into shallow right field, resetting to the top of the Rebel order. After Cox popped up a bunt attempt, Hailey Lunderman kept things rolling with a single through the left side, before Miranda Strother drew a walk.
Gamecock starter Jessica Elliott then issued a walk to Syrett for a free RBI, driving in Majam to make it 1-0 in favor of the Rebels. Dakota Matiko, back in at first base for the first time since her injury a month ago, roped an RBI line drive off the pitchers glove scoring Strother that pushed the advantage to 2-0.
That's all the offense Ole Miss needed as Landwehrmier sliced her way through the Gamecock lineup allowing just three baserunners in the complete-game effort.
The win for Landwehrmier was her third of the season, and just her third complete game and second shutout of her young career.
Majam finished the day with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate and a run scored, while Lunderman, Strother, Matiko and Alex Schneider all chipped in with a hit each.
Ole Miss also made history with the win Saturday becoming just the second team in school history to win a series against the Gamecocks in Columbia. Still with a series finale left Sunday, the Rebels have now won two-straight SEC road series.
