Softball Outlasts Arkansas in Series Opener
4/22/2016 | Softball
OXFORD, Miss. - The Rebel softball team outlasted Arkansas in an offensive battle, taking game one of the series, 10-7, Friday night at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
Arkansas' Grace Moll went the distance for the Razorbacks (17-30, 1-15 SEC), while Ole Miss (32-15, 7-9 SEC) starter Elisha Jahnke tossed five frames picking up the win while Kayla Landwehrmier worked a two-inning save.
The Rebels took advantage of three Arkansas errors on the night as four different Ole Miss hitters tallied multiple hits in the victory. Dakota Matiko finished with two RBI off a single in the third, and Sarah Van Schaik chipped in with a two-RBI pinch hit single in the sixth.
Ole Miss got the offensive production going in the first when Courtney Syrett delivered an RBI single, then Miranda Strother scored on a throwing error pushing Ole Miss in front 2-0.
After Arkansas took a 4-2 lead in the second thanks to a 3-run home run and RBI double, the Rebels responded in the third plating four of their own.
Ashton Lampton crossed home first after she led off the inning with a single, then scored on an error to make it 4-3 in favor of the Hogs. Matiko then punched her single to right center scoring Kylan Becker and Alex Schneider to give the home team a 5-4 lead. From there Elantra Cox shot one of her two hits on the night up the middle for an RBI single scoring Matiko, putting the Rebels in front 6-4.
In their next chance at the plate, the Rebels added two more off a Strother RBI single scoring Lunderman, and scored another thanks to a fielding error by the Arkansas second baseman.
Following a 3-run fifth from the Hogs, Van Schaik delivered her two-RBI pinch hit single up the middle that scored Lampton and Strother in what was the final scoring on the night between the two teams.
Strother, Lampton and Cox finished with two hits and two runs scored, while Syrett went 2-for-3 in the win. Landwehrmier's fourth save of 2016 ties the school record for most in a season set by Bobbi Wurth in 1998.
