Rebels Drop Opener to No. 2 Florida

OXFORD, Miss. - No. 2 Florida used a power effort with four home runs to defeat the Ole Miss softball team, 8-0, Friday night in the SEC series opener at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
The Gators (36-3, 10-3 SEC) plated runs in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings to top the Rebels (28-11, 4-6 SEC), who totaled just two hits on the night.
Elantra Cox and Natalie Martinez were responsible for the pair of hits for Ole Miss, both of which came in the first frame. The Rebels went on to leave one on base in that frame after getting caught stealing at second, then a pickoff at second that prevented an early rally.
Florida jumped on Ole Miss starter Madi Osias first in the second when Aubree Munro launched a solo shot to left center. The next inning, Kayli Kvistad and Amanda Lorenz both had solo blasts to make it 3-0.
Kirsti Merritt was responsible for the Gators' three-run home run in the fourth when she made it 6-0, before Florida went on to plate the final two in the sixth off a fielders choice and RBI single.
Osias went 3.2 innings in the circle dropping to 15-4 on the year. Kayla Landwehrmier went 1.1 innings in relief with just one hit allowed, while Krista Jacobs worked the final frame with two runs allowed off three hits and a walk.

Ole Miss and No. 2 Florida return for game two of the series Saturday night at 6 p.m.
