Rebel Alum Wins US Open Mid-Atlantic Playoffs

OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss women's tennis alum Nika Koukhartchouk is going back to the US Open National Playoffs with a chance to earn a spot in the US Open. She qualified for the national playoffs by capturing the Mid-Atlantic Playoff this week in College Park, Maryland.
Sectional qualifying tournaments are held across 15 USTA sections to include men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles.
Koukhartchouk, who works as a tennis professional at Grand Slam Tennis Club in Bedford, New York, while also competing in professional events, will be making her fourth trip and second in a row to Connecticut for the national playoffs. She qualified in 2012 and 2013 and again last year.
As the top seed, Koukhartchouk did not drop a set on her way to the final and then downed Alexis Merrill of Fairfax, Virginia 6-2, 6-1.
The 2016 US Open National Playoffs - Men's and Women's Singles Championships will be held Aug. 19-22.
The winners of the Men's and Women's Singles Championships earn a wild card into the US Open Qualifying Tournament at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, home of the US Open.
Koukhartchouk played for the Rebels from 2005-08 and helped them win the SEC Western Division title in 2005 and advance to the NCAA second round. She also participated in the NCAA Doubles Tournament in 2008. Off the court, Koukhartchouk was a three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete.
