Volleyball Alum Nakeyta Clair Signs Pro Contract
8/18/2016 | Volleyball
OXFORD, Miss. - After a record-setting career at Ole Miss, Rebel volleyball alum Nakeyta Clair set off on a new adventure across the Atlantic Ocean, where she signed a pro contract with Hylte/Halmstad Club in Halmstad, Sweden.
Clair knew she wanted to continue playing volleyball after graduation from Ole Miss, but it took her the summer to finally commit to leaving her comfort zone for a different culture, thousands of miles away.
"I had other offers right after graduation, but I wasn't ready," she admitted. "Once I finally told my agent I was ready, he found a team and it all worked out. I am happy I said no to the first two offers, because when this offer came I knew it was the right time. I am excited about the opportunity."
A native of Country Club Hills, Illinois - a suburb of the third largest city (Chicago) in America - Clair will be spending the next eight months in Halmstad, with a population just over 90,000. Located on the west coast of Sweden, Halmstad had what Clair was looking for.
"Where I always said I would like to be, this fits my description," Clair said. "Even though I probably won't be spending too much time on the beach, since I am going in the winter time, I wanted to be somewhere close to the water. I also wanted to be somewhere that was not too big but not too small. I want to travel and visit places, but not get lost."
During her four-year career holding down the middle for the Rebels, Clair became the second All-American in the history of the program and was a two-time AVCA All-Region and All-SEC selection. She holds the career and single-season records for total blocks, block assists and block solos. Clair also ranks second all-time in kills.
"We are so proud of Nakeyta, first of all for getting her degree this summer and secondly for stepping out of her comfort zone to go overseas and play volleyball," head coach Steven McRoberts said. "She has worked really hard over the past two years to get this opportunity and I know she will do great."
