Thornberry Leads Rebels to Second-Place Finish

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C.- Sophomore Braden Thornberry clinched his fourth top-five finish of his career to lead the Ole Miss men's golf team to a second-place finish at The Invitational at The Ocean Course Tuesday.
The Southaven, Mississippi native carded a 2-under par 70 in the final round to climb two spots and finish tied for fourth place overall. Thornberry finished tied for second in birdies on the tournament with 17 over 54 holes at the par-72, 7,115 yard Ocean Course.
"Braden picked up where he left off last year and played some very good golf," said Rebel head coach Chris Malloy. "I think this will be a special year for him."
Ole Miss finished in second behind Middle Tennessee State by six strokes with a team total of 856. The Rebels bested 15 other teams, including Maryland, West Virginia and host College of Charleston.
"Just like yesterday, we did so many good things and put ourselves in a great position to win the tournament," said Malloy. "We just made to many big numbers and it ultimately was the difference between winning and finishing second. We will get a couple of days of rest and be ready to get back into competition next week."
Senior Ben Wolcott posted par on 17 of 18 holes on his final round to finish tied for eighth place. His tournament was highlighted by a pair of 2-under 70s from the first and second round. Redshirt Sophomore Josh Seiple found the top-25 with a total score of 1-over 217. Junior college transfer Kerry Sweeney highlighted his tournament with a second round score of 4-under 68 and finished tied for 33rd. Redshirt Senior Noah West post a 6-over par 78 in the final round and finished in a tie for 49th place.
Freshman Brody Blackmon found the top-20 in his debut as a Rebel. Blackmon fired a team-low 5-under par 67 in the opening round and finished first among individuals competing tied for 19th overall.
