Rebel Golf Heads Into Second Round Tied for Third

COLLEGE GROVE, Tenn.- Braden Thornberry and Ben Wolcott placed in the top-10 to lead the Ole Miss golf team in the opening round of the FAMC Intercollegiate at The Grove Sunday.
Thornberry tied the tournament high with five birdies in the opening round en route to a 1-under par 71 at the 7,368-yard, par 72 golf course. He trails the leaders Paul Huber, of Cincinnati, and Clay Vannoy, of Troy, by one stroke.
Senior Ben Wolcott fired a 1-under on the back nine to finish at even-par 72 and is tied for seventh. Wolcott finished tied for first in the first round for scores on par-4s at a mark of 2-under.
"Ben and Braden both continue to lead this team" said Ole Miss Head Coach Chris Malloy. "Once we have two more players step up and match them we will be a pretty dangerous team."
Ole Miss sits tied for third after the first 18 holes and trailers the leader Cincinnati by four strokes. The Rebels lead the tournament with 16 birdies in the opening round.
Junior Kerry Sweeney birdied three times on the back nine to finish 2-over 74 on the day and tied for 31st. Freshman Brody Blackmon earned his first start of his career and posted a 3-over 75 to finish the day tied for 43rd. Josh Sieple posted a 5-over par 77 and is tied for 64th. Senior Noah West is competing as an individual and is tied for 43rd overall with a 3-over 75 in the opening round.
"We certainly did a lot of things very well today, but didn't capitalize on enough birdie opportunities to post a good score," said Malloy. "We let the greens get to us a bit and that's something that we need to work on. However, our guys fought until the end and kept themselves in this tournament with two rounds left. There is no doubt in my mind that we will play our best golf over the next two rounds."
