Rebels Defeat UTA in Home Opener

OXFORD, Miss. -- Paced by a double-double from junior outside hitter Lexi Thompson and strong efforts from reigning SEC Player of the Week Kate Gibson and sophomore Kathryn Cather, the Ole Miss volleyball team defeated UT Arlington 3-1 in the home opener at The Pavilion at Ole Miss Friday night in front of an electric crowd of 750.
Ole Miss hit .429 in the first set while UTA hit .407 to win a back and forth first set 25-23. The Rebels answered in the second to take it 25-22 and even the overall match heading into the break.
From there, it was all Ole Miss, as the Rebels hit .417 in the third set and .407 in the fourth to win going away, 25-13 and 25-19.

รขโฌยข Friday's match marked the debut in The Pavilion for the Rebels, who will play all home matches there while the Gillom Sports Center is undergoing a renovation.
รขโฌยข Ole Miss improved to 32-1 in non-conference matches under head coach Steven McRoberts.
รขโฌยข The Rebels improved to 3-1 against UT Arlington.
รขโฌยข Ole Miss hit .348 on the night and 11 team blocks, while UTA hit just .114.
รขโฌยข Lexi Thompson posted her third double-double in four matches with 14 kills and 11 digs and hit .306. She also added two blocks and a service ace.
รขโฌยข SEC Player of the Week Kate Gibson tallied a team-high 16 kills and threw down three solo blocks.
รขโฌยข Kathryn Cather had an outstanding night hitting, putting down 14 kills on a .611 clip with just three errors in the four sets.
รขโฌยข Junior middle blocker Taylor Alexander finished with 8 kills on a .400 clip and three blocks.
รขโฌยข Senior setter Aubrey Edie inched closer to eclipsing the career record for assists with 50 on the night. She now needs just 79 assists to break the record of 3,801 held by Rachael Kieckhaefer.

Ole Miss faces McNeese State Saturday at 1 p.m., and closes out the Rebel Classic against NC State at 7:30 p.m.
