Ole Miss Drops 2-1 Match to No. 15 Arkansas
9/25/2016 | Soccer
OXFORD, Miss. - Sophomore CeCe Kizer scored her third goal in the last two matches as the Ole Miss soccer team fell to No. 15 Arkansas, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
In a match that required heat timeouts due to the excessive afternoon temperatures, the Rebels (6-6, 1-3 SEC) took control early, but a comeback by the Razorbacks (11-1, 4-0 SEC) was the difference.
Kizer, who scored twice in Thursday's win over Mississippi State, made it two-straight games with a goal thanks to her score early on. At the 4:49 mark, senior Melissa Capocaccia found Kizer on the breakaway, before she beat the defender, got in a 1-v-1 situation with the goalkeeper and punched a chip shot into the right back corner giving the Rebels a 1-0 advantage.
That score held until midway through the half when Arkansas' Kayla McKeon provided the equalizer off a deflection in the box after a Razorback corner kick. The two teams went into the halftime break locked at 1-1 as Arkansas led the way in shots, 10-7.
Nine minutes into the second period, Arkansas' Claire Kelley pushed through a header for the game winner netting the second goal of the day.
The Rebels, who finished with 17 shots, posted many that looked to be on target, but a few missed by just inches. Freshman Gabby Little fired off one in the 31st that sailed in and looked to be on target, but it grazed the left post. Six minutes later, senior Gretchen Harknett had an attempt that hit the crossbar, which came just after another Little shot that was saved by Cameron Carter.
Harknett finished the contest with six of Ole Miss' 17 shots, while Kizer had four, two of which were on target. Freshman Alley Houghton got in on the action with two shots, one of which was saved, while Maddi Falter, Courtney Carroll and Addie Forbus all took one shot each.
Ole Miss returns to the pitch Saturday, Oct. 1, at Kentucky with first kick slated for 6:30 p.m. in Lexington.
