Rebels Post 15 Wins on Opening Weekend of Fall Play

RALEIGH, N.C. - After a few weeks of practicing against one another, the Ole Miss women's tennis team finally took to the courts against another opponent this weekend at the Wolfpack Invite hosted by NC State. The Rebels finished with 15 wins in doubles and singles against players from Princeton, NC State and Oklahoma.
Freshman Anna Vrbenska highlighted the Rebels in singles going undefeated against all three teams. She dominated Princeton's Gaby Pollner 6-1, 6-0 on the first day and then downed NC State's Claudia Wiktorin 6-3, 6-3 on Saturday. On Sunday, Vrbenska edged out Serena Nash of Oklahoma 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
Vrbenska also teamed up with junior Natalie Suk to post a 7-6(5) win against the No. 50 ranked team in the nation in doubles.
Senior Zalina Khairudinova went 2-1 in singles including rallying from a 2-5 deficit to beat Oklahoma's Mimi Fotopoulos 7-5 in the third on Sunday.
Hartono in Stillwater Pro Classic
While her teammates were in Raleigh at the Wolfpack Invite, junior Arianne Hartono began play at the Stillwater Pro Classic in Stillwater, Oklahoma Sunday. Hartono defeated Cameron Morra of the United States in the first round of qualifying 7-6(1), 6-1. Hartono will face Catherine Harrison in the second round Monday.

"It's always hard to have expectations for the first fall event. These were four very evenly matched teams, and it showed in the results. You always want to win a few more matches and we definitely had some opportunities to do so, but all in all it was a very valuable first fall event for us. Exciting to see our freshman, Anna Vrbenska go undefeated, beating three quality opponents. Great effort as well today by Zalina coming back from a 2-5 deficit in the third to win her match today, and going 2-1 in her three matches. We are looking forward to having some of the kids go to the All American championships next weekend to play in one of the top collegiate events of the year."
Up next
While Hartono continues play at the Stillwater Pro Classic, the rest of the team returns home to start preparing for the Riviera All-American Championships, which begin next weekend with the prequalifying tournament.
