OXFORD, Miss. â€" Ole Miss volleyball (13-9, 4-5) will play its fifth road contest in six matches as they travel to College Station, Texas Sunday to face Texas A&M. The match begins at 3:30 p.m. from Reed Arena and will be streamed on SEC Network + via the WatchESPN app.
Quick Hits
• Ole Miss lost a marathon 3-2 match at LSU Wednesday night, that marks the highest-scoring match (241 points) since volleyball went to the 25-point rally scoring in 2008. The match lasted 3 hours.
• Senior Lexi Thompson posted her 13th double-double of the year with 19 kills and 12 digs.
• Senior Kate Gibson added her SEC-leading 15th double-double of the season with 18 kills and 17 digs.
• Sophomore Emily Stroup posted her fifth double-double of the season with 15 kills and a career-high 21 digs.
• Sophomore Nayo Warnell finished with 8 blocks and also chipped in 9 kills.
• The Rebels finished with a season-high 13 blocks.
• Freshman Lauren Bars had 4 blocks and 27 assists. Sophomore Jordan Fate finished with 29 assists.
• Senior Kate Gibson is closing in on her 1,000th kill and 1,000th dig at Ole Miss. She needs 35 kills to reach 1,000 at Ole Miss, which would rank sixth all-time. She currently ranks seventh with 965 kills. Gibson needs 109 digs for her 1000th dig at Ole Miss and presently ranks eighth with 891. Earlier this year she joined the 1,000/1,000 club for her career, which includes one year at Memphis.
• Sophomore Nayo Warnell is close to breaking into the top 10 at Ole Miss for total blocks with 156 so far. She needs 24 to get there.
Scouting Texas A&M…
Texas A&M comes into the weekend at 6-8 overall and 3-4 in the SEC. They host Arkansas Friday night before welcoming the Rebels. The Aggies have played a tough schedule, which ranks as the No. 1 strength of schedule according to VolleyTalk.net. Sophomore Hollann Hans ranks fourth in the SEC with 4.41 points per set and fifth with 3.77 kills per set. She also ranks second in the league and 22nd in the nation with 0.46 aces per set.
Rebels vs. Aggies…
Texas A&M leads the series 13-0, including a 3-1 win last year in Oxford. The last time the two teams met in College Station (2015), the Aggies won 3-0.
Last Meeting…
Despite 22 kills on a .280 clip from senior outside hitter Kate Gibson, Ole Miss dropped a 3-1 (25-12, 21-25, 25-20, 25-18) decision to Texas A&M last year in Oxford. The Aggies dominated the first set 25-12, but the Rebels hit .361 in the second set to win it 25-21. A&M used a 5-1 run late in the third set to close it out 25-20 and take a 2-1 lead in the match. After a solid start to the fourth set, Texas A&M wrestled the lead from the Rebels in the middle of the set and never relinquished it again, winning 25-18 for 3-1.
Rebels Deep in the Heart of Texas…
Several Rebels call the state of Texas home, including starting setter Jordan Fate (Fairview) and starting middles Nayo Warnell (Dickinson) and Bayleigh Scott (Rockwall). Redshirt freshman Leah Mulkey and freshman Barrett Guttell are from Austin.
Homecoming for Mellinger…
Assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Tori Mellinger returns to her roots this weekend. The Dallas native played for Texas A&M from 2009-12 and finished her career with 1,480 digs, the second most in school history and most in the rally-scoring era. Her senior year, Mellinger helped lead the team to a 25-6 record, including a 16-4 mark in SEC play and an appearance in the NCAA second round.
