Arkansas Holds off Rebels in Five

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - For the third consecutive meeting, Ole Miss volleyball and Arkansas went the distance, with the Razorbacks holding off the Rebels 3-2 (18-25, 25-13, 13-25, 25-23, 12-15) in Fayetteville Friday night at Barnhill Arena.

The loss snapped the Rebels (12-6, 3-2) three-match winning streak overall and against the Razorbacks.

The Razorbacks regained momentum and took an early 5-2 lead in five forcing Ole Miss to call timeout. The Rebels won two straight points to pull within one, 5-4. Arkansas won three of the next four points to lead 8-5 at the changeover. The Rebels once again pulled to within one, 9-8. Arkansas used a 5-1 run to go up 13-10 and the Rebels called their final timeout. Ole Miss pulled to within 13-12 on a kill by Lexi Thompson and a Razorback attack error. After an Arkansas timeout, the Razorbacks won the next two points to take the set 15-12 and the match 3-2.

Arkansas jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in set one, and they never trailed going on to win it 25-18 behind a .364 hitting percentage to the Rebels .167.

Ole Miss regrouped and broke open a 5-5 tie early in set two with a 9-2 to run lead 14-7, as Arkansas called timeout. The Rebels, behind strong hitting of .438, kept the pressure on and won it 25-13 to even the match.

The Razorbacks led 15-12 at the media timeout in set three, but the Rebels went on a 10-5 run to take a 22-20 lead. They led 23-21, but Arkansas closed on a 4-0 run with four consecutive kills from senior Pilar Victoria to steal the set 25-23 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Set four was a back and forth affair until the Rebels used 5-2 run to go up 14-11 as Arkansas called timeout. The Rebels led 18-14 before Arkansas went on a 6-1 run to take the lead 20-19. Ole Miss answered with two straight points on a kill by Emily Stroup and an attack error from Arkansas to go back up 21-20. The Rebels led 24-22 on a kill from Thompson, but then the Razorbacks won the next point, before Thompson answered with another kill to hand the Rebels the set, 25-23 and extend the match.
