Scouting Mississippi State…
Mississippi State comes into weekend at 9-17 overall and 0-11 in the SEC. They've only won three sets in league play. The Bulldogs travel to Georgia Friday before coming to Oxford. A bright spot for the Bulldogs is outside hitter Jelena Vujcin, who is averaging 3.44 kills per set, which ranks seventh in the SEC and 4.03 points per set, which ranks eighth in league play.
Rebels vs. Bulldogs…
Ole Miss leads the all-time series 70-26, including a 3-0 win in Starkville earlier this year, which snapped a three-match win streak buy the Bulldogs in the series.
Last meeting…
For the first time since 2014, Ole Miss swept in-state rival Mississippi State, coming away with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 26-24) win on Sept. 27 in Starkville, in front of a loud crowd and a nationally-televised audience on ESPNU. The win snapped a three-match losing streak in the series to the Bulldogs as the Rebels took a 70-26 lead in the series. Senior outside hitters Lexi Thompson and Kate Gibson finished with 8 kills each to lead the Rebels. Gibson also added 10 digs and 4 service aces. Sophomore Nayo Warnell finished with 5 kills on a .455 clip and tallied 6 blocks. As a team, the Rebels posted a season-high for three sets with 11 blocks.
Last time out…
Despite a triple-double from senior outside hitter Kate Gibson, Ole Miss dropped a 3-2 match to Arkansas last Sunday at the Gillom Athletics Performance Center. The Rebels had a chance to win it in the fourth leading by four points midway through the set and up 2-1 overall, but Arkansas rallied to force a fifth set. With momentum on their side, the Razorbacks jumped out to an early 8-3 lead at the changeover. The Rebels never got closer than three, as the Razorbacks closed out the set 15-11 and the match 3-2. Gibson posted her first triple-double and the first in program history with 18 kills, 14 digs and a career-high 11 blocks.
An exclusive club for Gibson/Thompson…
Currently in Division I, there are 27 members of the 1,000-Kill, 1000-Dig Club and six players are less than 100 digs away from joining the group. Houston Baptist and Ole Miss are the only teams to boast two members of the elite group.
