Rebels Wrap Up Second Round Of Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico - Junior Kerry Sweeney carded a 4-under par 68 with seven birdies to lead No. 15 Ole Miss in the second round of the Puerto Rico Classic Monday.

The Melbourne, Florida native gave the Rebels a boost in his final nine holes, rolling in four consecutive birdies on holes No. 3-6. Sweeney tallied three birdies in his first nine holes to offset a bogey and double-bogey on holes No. 12 and 13.

The JUCO National Player of the Year in 2015-16, Sweeney is looking for his second top-10 finish of the season. "Kerry really fought back and put together a great round for us today." said Rebel head coach Chris Malloy. "He showed a lot of heart." Ole Miss is tied for tenth headed into the final round with No. 17 North Carolina after posting a score of 8-over par 282. No. 22 Clemson leads the field with a team total of 17-under 528.

It was an uncharacteristic day for much of the team at a hot and humid Rio Mar River Course. Senior Ben Wolcott post a 2-over par 74 and is tied for 36th place. Freshman Brody Blackmon birdied back-to-back holes at No. 17 and 18, but finished the day with a 4-over par 76. Sophomore Braden Thornberry and senior Noah West are tied for 62nd headed into the final round.

"Today was by far our worst team round of the year," said Malloy. "It's very uncharacteristic of this group to make the mistakes that we made today. Golf is a very humbling game at times and it certainly was for us today. We need to respond tomorrow and come out ready to play."

The Rebels tee off the final round tomorrow at 6:00 a.m. CST. Fans can follow live stats by downloading the Ole Miss Athletics mobile app or at birdiefire.com.
