Two Rebels Earn Top-20 Finishes At Puerto Rico

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico - Junior Kerrey Sweeney and senior Ben Wolcott combined for ten birdies as Ole Miss carded even-par 288 in the final round of the Puerto Rico Classic Tuesday.
Wolcott jumped out to a hot start in the final round, tallying birdies on four of his first six holes. The Dickson, Tennessee native finished with a 3-under par 69 for the day and finished tied for 20th.
"It was nice to get off to a good start," Wolcott said. "I knew it had to happen at some point today. It was great seeing putts fall from the start."
Sweeney's great tournament started in the second round with a team-low round score of 4-under 68. Sweeney knocked in five birdies in the final round to finish tied for 12th overall.
Freshman Brody Blackmon improved each round, closing out the final day with a 1-under 71 with four birdies. Sophomore Braden Thornberry posted a 4-over 76 with three birdies in the final round. Blackmon finished tied for 59th and Thornberry tied for 64th. Senior Noah West fired a 1-under par 71 on the opening round and finished with an overall score of 236.
"I'm proud that we had our best round of the tournament on the final day," said Rebel head coach Chris Malloy. "We were close to having a really solid score but we were just one score short. We need to get home and regroup quickly as we have to get back into action this weekend."
Ole Miss finished in 10th place, ahead of No. 17 North Carolina and No. 48 Alabama. No. 22 Clemson won the 25th annual Puerto Rico Classic and Luke Schniederjans of No. 28 Georgia Tech earned medalist honors.
