CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico - Sophomore Braden Thornberry fired a 4-under 67 to lead the No. 29 Ole Miss men's golf team in the opening round of the Querencia Cabo Collegiate Sunday.

Thornberry posted six birdies at the 6,298-yard par-71 Querencia Country Club to finish tied for third with three individuals. Joining Thornberry with scores under par were senior Ben Wolcott and sophomore Josh Seiple at 1-under par 70. The trio combined for 14 birdies to lead the Rebels to an opening round score of 4-over par 288, good for a tie for seventh place with No. 30 Florida State. The Rebels finish ahead of three ranked teams including No. 1 Vanderbilt and co-host No. 26 Arkansas.

"We had three guys play great golf and give us a shot today," said Ole Miss head coach Chris Malloy. "Unfortunately, we were one score short. These guys will be ready to play tomorrow. Braden got back to his grove and played a great round today."

Junior Kerry Sweeney birdied the 373-yard par 3 No. 5, but finished the day tied for 73rd. Freshman Brody Blackmon eagled the par-5 539-yard hole No. 15 and heads to the second round tied for 74th. Sophomore Beau Briggs is competing as an individual and is tied for 65th after an opening round 6-over par 77.

The Rebels tee off the second round tomorrow 11:45am CST.
