2/3/2017 | Rifle
OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss rifle team will travel to Lexington, Kentucky to face No. 16 Akron Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. CT.
Noting the Rebels Last Match
The Rebels may be coming off another close loss to Navy (4640-4633), but with two shooters being just one point away from career high's, the Rebels are ready to get back on the range.
Last weekend, sophomore Harley Gardner led the Rebels in both smallbore competition (572) and air rifle (591). This 591 score marked the third time this season Gardner finished just one point away from her career high. However, Gardner posted the highest aggregate of the match with an 1163, her fifth highest score this season.
Senior Alison Weisz currently leads the Rebels with the highest aggregate score of the 2016-17 season with an 1178, a result of a school-record 597 in air rifle and a 581 in smallbore.
Matchup with Akron
Ole Miss Rifle has faced Akron head-to-head the past two years with the highest score being a 4591 aggregate during the 2014 season. The Rebels totaled 2266 in smallbore and a 2329 in air rifle in a loss to the Zips.
Akron Rifle competed at the Palmyra Invitational last weekend, but was not a head-to-head competitor for the Rebels. The Zips finished the tournament in 5th place, shooting a combined score of 4594. They are led by Seniors Zachary Strohl and Connor O'Mara, both of which posted season-high smallbore scores last year in Oxford against the Rebels.
Marsha's Minute
"The Akron coach and I wanted to meet at a neutral site and since Kentucky offered to host it was a great fit, especially because we didn't travel to Kentucky this year," Beasley said. "The NCAA Championship selection uses the top scores posted by a team at three different locations, so it made sense for us to add another location to our schedule."
"We have been working hard and despite some setbacks, I do believe we are improving," Beasley said. "Akron has been shooting similar scores to what we have and as we get to the end of the season all teams seem to be putting up higher scores. We are really looking forward to a good competition tomorrow."
