Ole Miss in Mexico for El Tigre Invitational
4/1/2017 | Women's Golf
PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico - The Ole Miss women's golf team is enjoying a working vacation this weekend at El Tigre Invitational.
"We're going to have one day of fun, doing some zip-lining and some ATV riding. Just being in Mexico is going to be awesome. We're staying at the resort, so it should be a relaxing time," said head coach Kory Henkes. "We just have to stay focused on the reason why we're down there."
After a little fun and adventure, the Rebels will get down to business tying to navigate a unique and difficult course. El Tigre Golf Club features five Par 3s and five Par 5s, as well as 140 bunkers, water on 12 of 18 holes and a signature island green on the sixth hole.
"It's going to be a little different. We don't really know what we're facing until we see it. But there will be a lot more obstacles than we're used to playing at our home course. We'll get some wind down by the ocean as well, especially playing in the afternoon the first two days," Henkes said. "It looks like a great track. They've had a lot of big tour events there, so it should be fun. It's going to be a good test for us."
El Tigre is the final challenge of the regular season for Ole Miss. The Rebels are next in action for the SEC Championship, April 21-23. With the postseason approaching, Henkes would love to see a strong finish in Mexico to boost her squad's resume for NCAA Regionals, but for this weekend, she knows her Rebels must stay focused on each swing to see success.
"We'd love to see a good finish, but you can't really think like that," Henkes said. "You just have to take it one step at a time. At this point, we have to stick to our game plan. We've been working hard to make practices difficult to add some extra pressure to the girls, and we've been seeing some good play out of them."
The Rebels will tee off at 3 p.m. CT Sunday in a shotgun start. Ole Miss will start from holes 7-9 and will be paired with Texas San Antonio and Kansas.
