Rebels In Second After Day One At NCAA Austin Regional

AUSTIN, Texas - Ole Miss posted an opening round 2-under 282 in the NCAA Austin Regional at the University of Texas Golf Club Monday to finish the day in second behind the host Longhorns heading into tomorrow's second round.
The Rebels were led by senior Ben Wolcott and sophomore Braden Thornberry, who are both tied for second overall after firing opening round 3-under 68s. Wolcott's bogey-free round included a chip in for birdie on No. 11 and another chip in for eagle on the 562-yard, par 5 14th. Thornberry tied for the second most birdies in the opening round with five after starting play on the back nine. He got off to a hot start birding two of his first five holes on Nos. 10 and 14, and would finish strong, carding birdies two of his last four holes including the 605-yard, par 5 ninth.
"We got off to a good start today and held on as the conditions got a bit worse," said head coach Chris Malloy. "I certainly did not feel like we had our best stuff, but still managed to post a low round. We know it's a three-round tournament, but it certainly helps to get off to a good start as we did today."
Ole Miss was one of two teams to finish the day under par, as the Rebels trail host No. 11 Texas by five strokes. Top seed Oklahoma State is in third at 3-over par, while No. 23 Arizona State, No. 36 North Carolina State and No. 50 Iowa State are tied for fourth at 6-over par. The top five teams in the regional advance to the NCAA Championships next week.
Sophomore Josh Seiple and junior Kerry Sweeney are both tied for 24th after they each shot a 2-over 73 in the first round. Seiple carded three birdies and Sweeney posted two birdies on the day. Senior Noah West birdied four times on the round and is tied for 33rd at 3-over par.
The Rebels are paired with host No. 11 Texas and No. 4 Oklahoma State with a tee time of 9:15 AM CST.
