SUGAR GROVE, Ill. - Ole Miss sophomore Braden Thornberry continued to stay in contention of a national title with a 1-under par 71 in the second round of the NCAA Championships Saturday.

Thornberry started off with a bogie on the first hole, but found his groove on the next eleven holes with with five birdies and six pars. After tying the collegiate-course record with an opening round 6-under 66, Thornberry is one stroke off the leader Scottie Scheffler of Texas at 7-under par and is tied with three other competitors, including Matthais Schwab of Vanderbilt, Justin Suh of Souther California and Bjarki Petursson of Kent State.

"I got off to a shakey start," said Thornberry. "I started to put it together through the next seven holes and was able to get to 10-under at one point. I was looking good, but just leaked a little bit coming home. It wasn't too bad overall today."

Ole Miss posted a second round score of 299 and is in 22nd place, eight strokes off the cut line. The Rebels need to finish inside the top 15 tomorrow to advance to a fourth round of stroke play. The top nine individuals not on advancing teams will qualify for the fourth round. An individual national champion will be crowned following the fourth round of play Monday.

"We did not have the greatest of starts, but we held it together," said head coach Chris Malloy. "Braden played really well. We had a couple of other guys that fought and got it back. Unfortunately, the 16th and 17th holes, which are some of the tougher holes out here, we did not execute on those holes and we got punished for it. We need to be ready for it tomorrow."

Sophomore Josh Seiple birdied three of four holes on the back nine including a chip-in on the par-3 16th and finished with a 4-over 76 on the day. Senior Ben Wolcott and junior Kerry Sweeney also carded 76s in the second round. Senior Noah West is 10-over on the tournament headed into the third round.

The Rebels are scheduled to tee off the second round tomorrow at 1:00PM CST.
