No. 22 Rebel Men Beat Out Four Ranked Schools, Including No. 3 Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. – A frost delay and cold conditions met the Ole Miss men's and women's cross country teams in Wisconsin for the Pre-National Invitational, but the nationally-ranked Rebel squads still managed solid outings in the final regular season races of 2018 on Saturday.

The No. 22 Rebel men put forth a strong showing in the deep Cardinal 8K race, taking seventh in the team standings at 220 points ahead of four ranked teams in No. 15 Southern Utah (10th, 310), No. 20 Michigan (11th, 338), No. 3 Wisconsin (13th, 396) and No. 26 NC State (14th, 423). Two-time defending national champions Northern Arizona cruised to the men's Cardinal title with a 41-84 advantage over No. 5 Stanford.

Sophomore Waleed Suliman, a 2017 selection to both the All-NCAA South Region and SEC All-Freshman teams, was the top Rebel finisher in 26th place at an 8K time of 24:26.7. Suliman was part of a pack of Rebels that hit the gas after the 2K split, where most of the field was still bunched together. Included in that was redshirt sophomore Michael Coccia, who jumped up 25 spots over the last 2.2K to finish 32nd at a career-best 8K time of 24:29.9.

Other Rebel scorers included junior Farah Abdulkarim (35th, 24:32.1), freshman Mario Garcia Romo (48th, 24:37.7, PR) and redshirt freshman Cade Bethmann (84th, 24:54.5, PR).

The No. 18 Rebel women kicked off the day following the frost delay in the Cardinal 6K race, taking 12th in the team standings at 362 points. No. 7 Arkansas edged out No. 4 Oregon, 51-71, for the win.

Sophomore and 2017 All-Region runner Clio Ozanne-Jaques led the way, finishing 37th in her first race of the season at 20:59.6. Other Rebel scorers included redshirt junior Maddie McHugh (72nd, 21:25.3, PR), sophomore Nicole Rice (81st, 21:33.1), sophomore Victoria Simmons (85th, 21:35.9, PR) and redshirt freshman Lisa Vogelgesang (87th, 21:37.3, PR).

Ole Miss also had a handful run in the unseeded Gray races. In the women's Gray 6K, redshirt sophomore Anna Elkin notched a top-10 finish in eighth place at 21:49.4, while freshman Dalton Hengst led the Rebels in the men's Gray 8K in 54th place at 26:22.3.

The Rebels will now have one week off to prepare for the 2018 SEC Championships at Auburn on Oct. 26.
