Ole Miss Erases 17-Point Deficit to Top Razorbacks, 37-33
Quarterback Jordan Ta'amu amassed 528 yards of total offense—387 through the air and 141 on the ground—the second-most in program history behind Archie Manning in the victory. He capped the tremendous day by leading the Rebels on a stunning 97-yard drive in the final minutes of the game.
The Ole Miss defense came through with a key stop late in the contest, forcing an Arkansas punt with just over two minutes to play and the score 33-31. The punt took a Razorback bounce all the way to the 3-yard line. With plenty of green in front of them, the Rebels chased space. Ta'amu hit A.J. Brown on a 20-yard gain early in the drive. Two plays later, Dawson Knox broke free for a 48-yard gain to put the Rebels to within field goal range.
The Rebels didn't stop there. Ta'amu capped his incredible day on the ground with a 15-yard rush down to the Arkansas 14. Phillips did the rest, notching a nine-yard rush before punching in the game-winning score from five yards out. The Landshark Defense signaled the end of the contest when Zedrick Woods intercepted a Cole Kelley pass on the first play of the ensuing drive.
Ole Miss struck first on the night after Ta'amu found D.K. Metcalf down the sideline for a 49-yard gain on the second play of the game. Luke Logan capped the drive with a 36-yard field goal.
The Razorbacks answered, using a 38-yard connection between Ty Storey and Rakeem Boyd to tie the game at three on a 43-yard Connor Limpert field goal. Arkansas claimed the lead on its following drive when Cheyenne O'Grady broke free for a 39-yard scoring reception.
It looked as though the Rebels would tie it on the following possession, but a jump ball in the end zone went in favor of Arkansas. Following the turnover, Boyd broke off a 69-yard touchdown run to put the Hogs head 17-3 at the end of one quarter.
The Rebels fought back on the other side of the ball. An early completion to Brown in the drive, followed by a pass interference flag against Arkansas, set up the score. Three runs by Phillips sent the Rebels deep into Hog territory, where Ta'amu finished the job with an 18-yard scoring run to make it 17-10.
The Razorbacks came right back on the following drive when Cole Kelley linked up with La'Michael Pettway on a 39-yard touchdown. The home team tacked on three more points before the break on a 38-yard field goal by Limpert.
On the final drive of the first half, Ole Miss went to the air as big plays by Braylon Sanders, Brown, DaMarkus Lodge and Knox set up the Rebels' second touchdown on the night. On second-and-goal, Ta'amu hit Lodge in the end zone for his second receiving touchdown of the season, cutting the deficit to 10, 27-17, at halftime.
Out of the break, Arkansas added another field goal off the leg of Limpert after consecutive tackles for a loss by Ross Donelly and Qaadir Sheppard halted the Razorback drive.
The Rebel offense came out of halftime and wasted no time finding the end zone. On 3rd-and-11, Ta'amu shook off a sack, rolled out and hit Octavious Cooley up the sideline. The big Rebel tight end broke free 66 yards down the sideline for his first career touchdown to shrink the Arkansas lead to six.
The Ole Miss defense held strong in the red zone, again limiting Arkansas to a field goal. Limpert hit from 36 yards out to make it a nine-point gap.
Early in the fourth quarter, Ole Miss had Arkansas backed up to a 3rd-and-20, but a pass interference call against the Rebels kept the drive alive. However, the Rebel defense kept fighting. A tackle for loss by Benito Jones, followed by the first career sack for Tariqious Tisdale forced an Arkansas punt.
The Rebel offense took advantage, traversing 84 yards on 10 plays to cut the lead to two. On the key scoring drive, Ta'amu busted a 27-yard run to set up a two-yard rushing score by Isaiah Woullard to make it 33-31.
The Ole Miss defense followed with perhaps its biggest stop of the season to date. Linebacker Willie Hibbler made the key play of the drive, knocking a pass away from Pettway on third down to force the Arkansas punt, setting the stage for the game-deciding drive.
Ole Miss returns to action next Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. The Rebels will welcome Auburn to Oxford for an 11 a.m. CT kick on ESPN.
